climate science/new front group linked to attack on epa. As the Senate prepares to debate new comprehensive climate and energy legislation, the British newspaper The Guardian has reported that a shadowy front group linked to a top official of an international chemical conglomerate-Solvay-joined a petition to block EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gases. The little known group-The Coalition for Responsible Regulation (CRR)-filed the petition in February to block EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gases along with the American Cattleman's Association and a variety of mining interests, including Massey Energy, the owner of the mine where a deadly blast killed 29 miners in early April. The Guardian reports that documents filed with the state of Texas shows one of the directors of CRR is Richard Hogan, president of Solvay Chemicals Inc, a Texas subsidiary of the multinational chemical conglomerate based in Brussels. Solvay Chemicals makes sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), an extremely potent greenhouse gas used for industrial cleaning. The Guardian also reported that another little known group, the Alliance for Natural Climate Change Science, also has signed a petition along with CRR and other groups in March against the EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gases. The newspaper says court filings linked ANCCS to a Colorado businessman convicted of fraud in 2008, and it reported that other filings link the group to the climate skeptic group the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, which has received funding from oil companies. climate science/weathercasters. From The Project on Climate Science: While many weathercasters are unfamiliar with climate science, the American Meteorological Society, the organization representing and certifying TV weathercasters, has confirmed the strength of the science underlying global warming. (AMS statement). Many leading broadcast meteorologists have spoken out forcefully to highlight the certainty of the science. (Ryan & Toohey-Morales BAMS essay). Highlighting the views of a well-known denier of climate change, whose statements have repeatedly been debunked by scientists, does not fairly represent the depth of knowledge in the meteorology community. From the Union of Concerned Scientists: Over the last few months, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been attacked for minor errors in its sprawling 2007 report on climate change. glaciers are still melting! From the Union of Concerned Scientists: Climate contrarians are inflating the importance of an erroneous reference to Himalayan glaciers in a 2007 U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report to attack the scientific body and its chairman, Rajendra Pachauri. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) expects ideological bloggers, some members of Congress, and fossil-fuel industry front groups to try to exploit this relatively small error in the report to bolster conspiracy theories about the IPCC and climate scientists. climate is changing u.s. agriculture. From USDA: The Earth's climate is changing. Human activities such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation have altered the global climate. Climate change signals are also manifesting themselves in U.S. ecosystems. Although U.S. temperature and precipitation records show that our country has become warmer and wetter during the last 100 years, there is considerable regional variation. USDA is currently examining how these climate changes are affecting agriculture, land resources, water resources and biodiversity in the United States. Read more here ... Read less

As world leaders work in Copenhagen to try to combat this problem, some critics are seeking to cloud the debate and confuse the public." Read more here ... Read less

factcheck debunks "climategate". The independent FactCheck.org has concluded: "Climate skeptics are claiming that [the stolen emails] show scientific misconduct that amounts to the complete fabrication of man-made global warming. We find that to be unfounded: The messages, which span 13 years, show a few scientists in a bad light, being rude or dismissive. An investigation is underway, but there’s still plenty of evidence that the earth is getting warmer and that humans are largely responsible. Some critics say the e-mails negate the conclusions of a 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, but the IPCC report relied on data from a large number of sources, of which CRU was only one.E-mails being cited as "smoking guns" have been misrepresented. For instance, one e-mail that refers to "hiding the decline" isn’t talking about a decline in actual temperatures as measured at weather stations. These have continued to rise, and 2009 may turn out to be the fifth warmest year ever recorded. The "decline" actually refers to a problem with recent data from tree rings." uk scientists affirm climate findings. 1,700 leading scientists in the United Kingdom released the following statement Thursday: "We, members of the UK science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for global warming and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to human activities. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive. They come from decades of painstaking and meticulous research, by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity. That research has been subject to peer review and publication, providing traceability of the evidence and support for the scientific method." Read more here ... Read less

scientists reaffirm climate findings. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has reaffirmed the position of its Board of Directors and the leaders of 18 respected organizations, who concluded based on multiple lines of scientific evidence that global climate change caused by human activities is now underway, and it is a growing threat to society.
“The vast preponderance of evidence, based on years of research conducted by a wide array of different investigators at many institutions, clearly indicates that global climate change is real, it is caused largely by human activities, and the need to take action is urgent,” said Alan I. Leshner, chief executive officer of AAAS and executive publisher of the journal Science. Read more here ... Read less

hacked emails don't change facts. From NRDC blogs: After 20 years of working on global warming I’m still naïve. I thought there was a chance that the controversy stirred up by the emails hacked from the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit might be a short blip that would die down after the scientists involved explained the context of the handful of emails that appear most troubling. After all these emails involved a small fraction of the climate science community and center on one of the least important (tree ring records) of the multiple independent data sets that unequivocally show that the earth is heating up due to carbon pollution. Silly me. …Read more here ... Read less
